Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) has become one of the most popular treatments in aesthetics and skincare. From hair removal to skin rejuvenation, it’s a versatile, non-invasive technology that offers long-lasting results. But what exactly is IPL hair removal, and how does it work?
Understanding IPL
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a technology that uses broad-spectrum light to target specific structures in the skin. Unlike lasers, which emit a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths in quick pulses. This makes it highly adaptable for different skin concerns, including hair removal, pigmentation, redness, and signs of ageing.
The treatment works by delivering light energy into the skin, which is absorbed by targeted pigments. For example, in hair removal, the light is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, converting light into heat. This heat damages the follicle, reducing its ability to grow hair. In skin treatments, IPL can target haemoglobin in blood vessels or melanin in pigmented areas to improve tone, texture, and overall appearance.
How IPL Treatments Work
During an IPL session, a hand-held device is used to emit short bursts of light onto the treatment area. Protective eyewear is worn to shield the eyes from the bright pulses. Most treatments are relatively quick, depending on the area being treated, for example, a small area like the upper lip may take only a few minutes, whereas larger areas such as the legs may take longer.
Most clients experience minimal discomfort, often described as a light snapping sensation on the skin. Modern IPL devices also have built-in cooling systems to enhance comfort and protect the skin. Following treatment, the skin may feel slightly warm, and minor redness can occur, but this typically subsides within a few hours.
Benefits of IPL
IPL is celebrated for its versatility and effectiveness. Some of the key benefits include:
Hair reduction: Long-term reduction in unwanted hair for some skin and hair types (Recommended 6-8 sessions, not suitable for blonde or red hair, or dark skin).
Pigmentation correction: Reduces sun spots, age spots, and freckles.
Vascular improvement: Helps with redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea.
Skin rejuvenation: Stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture and elasticity.
Is IPL Right for You?
While IPL is suitable for many people, it’s important to consult with a qualified professional before treatment. Skin type, hair colour, and medical history all play a role in determining whether IPL will be effective and safe for you.
